Lisa Adams, a junior Latin and History major at Monmouth College, is a recipient of the 2005 Carole Ann Ryan Award for College Foreign Language Teaching Majors. This prize is awarded annually by the Illinois Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ICTFL), a not-for-profit association established in 1987. ICTFL has become the largest state-wide foreign language teachers' organization in Illinois, with over 1800 members who instruct from the elementary through college levels. The Illinois Council also serves the needs of more than a dozen affiliated foreign language teacher organizations. Lisa plans to become a Latin teacher after graduation from Monmouth College.
In the spring of 2002, the ICTFL Board of Directors created the Carole Anne Ryan Award for college students who are preparing to become teachers of foreign languages. As many as five such awards are presented annually, to recognize promising students enrolled in Illinois colleges and universities.
Recipients receive complimentary registration for the ICTFL WinterFest, as well as for the ICTFL Fall Conference, to be held this year October 20-22, 2006 at the Marriott Hickory Ridge in Lisle, Illinois. They also receive a one year’s complimentary membership in ICTFL and an award certificate, which will be presented at the Fall Conference Awards Banquet.
The award commemorates the life and good works of the late president of ICTFL, Carole Ann Ryan, who was a teacher and administrator at Illinois College. Dr. Ryan was admired and appreciated as a member and leader of ICTFL. She was also passionately dedicated to the preparation and careers of students. It is in commemoration of her personal and professional dedication that this award is made. |
