Monmouth College students were joined by more than 110,000 Latin students across the U.S.A., Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, Germany, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, and Zimbabwe in this year's National Latin Exam. Participation in the Exam has increased each year since its inception in 1978, when approximately 6,000 students enrolled. Exams are given for Latin I through Latin VI. Students in each level answer 40 questions. Categories include grammar, comprehension, mythology, life, history, derivatives, and questions based on a short passage in Latin. The time limit for the exam is 40 minutes. The National Latin Exam, under the joint sponsorship of the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League, is administered each year during the second week in March. Monmouth College is one of only six colleges and universities which participated in this exam this year.
The National Latin Exam Committee wrote to instructor, Virginia Hellenga, commending these students for their academic excellence.
