EAST PEORIA TEACHER NAMED FIRST WINNER OF WATKINS AWARD. Oxford, Ohio
The American Classical League is pleased to announce that the first
recipient of the Dr. Elizabeth Watkins Latin Teacher Award is Janene C.
Mattingly of Washington, Illinois.
The award was established by Dr. Dwight G. Watkins in memory of his wife,
who taught Latin at Oak Hills High School in Ohio. The $500 award can be
used as the recipient sees fit. Applicants must have taught Latin for at
least three years at the K-12 level and be certified in their own states
in Latin.
Mattingly, who teaches at East Peoria Community High school, is a 28-year
veteran and ACL member who has long been active in the Illinois Classical
Conference. Active, too, in her school, she has advised the school's
National Honor Society for 20 years and coached cheerleading for more than
a decade. Principal Paul Whittington called Mattingly "a model of
fairness and integrity" under whose leadership "the Latin program
continues to maintain its enrollment numbers and flourishes even though
the school offers two other language options." |
