Educational Background:

Masters degree in Latin (Honors) Loyola University of Chicago, 1982.

Bachelor of Arts degree in Latin, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1967

Secondary Education Certification, Knox College, 1987, in history, English, German.

Completed a graduate course in English (Russian Literature Meets Hollywood) at Western Illinois University (summer 1991); and four graduate courses in journalism and desktop publishing (Microsoft Word and Pagemaker) at the University of Iowa (Summer 1991 and1992).

Completed advanced level Italian language course, Linguaviva, Florence, Italy, January-February 2004, developing oral and written skills, and proficiency in reading Italian.

Teaching Experience:

Adjunct faculty member, Monmouth College, teaching Elementary Latin (1994 - present), Freshman Seminar [renamed Introduction to Liberal arts, 2003] (1997 - present), Scientific Terminology (1999 - present), Latin Directed Readings, Ovid’s Metamorphosis (spring 2002). Designed activities to enhance and enrich student learning. Worked individually with students to help them gain competence and increase self expression in mastering new material. Latin students have earned top awards each year in the National Latin Exam.

Teacher of Latin I-IV, English, journalism; adviser to school newspaper and Latin club at Monmouth High School, Monmouth, Illinois (1991-1993). Revitalized Latin program. Students earned top awards in the National Latin Exam and the Illinois Latin Tournament.

 

Organized field trips to The Art Institute of Chicago. Helped students publish a monthly newspaper, The Clipper, using Macintosh Word and Pagemaker. The Clipper earned a Quill and Scroll international first place award.

 

Teacher of Latin I-IV, English, history, and etymology at Trinity High School, River Forest, Illinois (1987-1991). Adviser to student newspaper and Latin club; served on scholarship committee and committee on study skills. Students earned top awards in the National Latin Exam.

Adjunct faculty member, Carl Sandburg College, developing and teaching courses in medical terminology and word power (1968-1987).

Professional Activities:

Member of the committee to redesign Freshman Seminar, Monmouth College, (summer 2000).

Attended American Classical League National Convention, Madison (June 2002) and Boston (June 1991).

Participated in the Illinois Humanities Council summer institute in the humanities for secondary school teachers: "Teaching Roman Civilization in High School," Monmouth College (June 1987).

Member Illinois Classical Conference, Archeological Institute of America, American Classical League, Classical Association of the Midwest and South.

 

Related Experience:

Lived in Florence, Italy, January — March 2004, studying Italian language, art, and culture.

Revised and expanded the Glossary and wrote etymological backgrounds of scientific terms throughout the text for Concise Text of Neuroscience, 2nd ed., Robert E. Kingsley, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1999.

Copyedited the book Science and the Scientists of Knox College: 1837 to 1971, Billy Geer, Michael Dunn and Rebecca Swanson (1997).

Copyedited and proofread Fall and Winter issues of the Knox College literary arts magazine, Catch (1995).

Revised and edited the Knox College Catalog for 1985-86, 1986-87, 1987-88, working closely with the Dean of the College, the Director of Public Relations, the faculty and administrative staff. Copyedited and created an updated, revised index for the Knox College Catalog (1993, 1995, 1997).

Gave encouragement, emotional support and personal assistance to students on ACM programs at the Newberry Library (1973-1974) and in Florence (1982-1983).

 

Extracurricular involvement:

Cellist with the student Monmouth College String Ensemble, giving several performances to the college community each year (1999 — 2002, 2003 - present).
