2008 FOX WRITING CONTEST The Department of Classics at Monmouth College, Monmouth, Illinois, is proud to announce the winners of the twenty-fourth annual Bernice L. Fox Classics Writing Contest. The topic of this year's contest, open to all high school students, was “The Modern Labors of Hercules: If Hercules were alive today what twelve labors would he perform?” This year there were 233 entries from 57 schools in 22 states. Each entrant receives a certificate of participation from Monmouth College. The winner of a $250 cash award is Nadia Pierrehumbert of Evanston Township High School in Evanston, Illinois. Nadia is a student of Ms. Elizabeth Holding. Click here to read her entry. Honorable mentions (listed randomly by school) were awarded to the following three students: Jennifer Chan of Harvard-Westlake High School, North Hollywood, CA (Teacher: Mr. Paul Chenier); Bryan Kauder of Midlothian High School, Midlothian, VA (Teacher: Ms. Amy Petersen) and Jeremy Simmons of Milken Community High School, Los Angeles, CA (Teacher: Mr. Beau Lindsay). This essay contest honors Bernice L. Fox who taught English, Latin and Greek at Monmouth College from 1947 to 1981 and who also served for some time as chair of the Department of Classics. Dr. Fox spent much of her life in promoting the study of Latin in Illinois high schools. The college welcomes suggestions for future contest topics. Please contact Dr. Thomas J.
