2007 FOX WRITING CONTEST The Department of Classics at Monmouth College, Monmouth, Illinois, is proud to announce the winners of the twenty-third annual Bernice L. Fox Classics Writing Contest. The goal of this year's contest was for the students to imagine a Greek hero giving an address to a joint session of the U. S. Congress today. This year there were 147 entries from 29 schools in 17 states. Each entrant receives a certificate of participation from Monmouth College. The winner of a $250 cash award is Michael Seitz of Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. Michael is a student of Dr. Rick Seay. Honorable mentions were awarded to the following eight students (listed randomly by school): Jeremy Simmons of Milken Community High School, Los Angeles, CA (Teacher: Ms. Kimberly Kemtes); Stephanie Rosaci of Woodstock Academy, Woodstock, CT (Teacher Mrs. Beck); Caleb Decker, Lizzie Oakley, and Kathleen McKiernan of Bishop Chatard High School (Teacher: Mrs. Lucy Wilkins); Pranav Krishnan of Naperville Central High School, Naperville, IL (Teacher: Mr. Dan Tompkins); Ryan Marr of Monacan High School, Richmond, VA (Teacher: Mrs. Linda Wagstaff); and Nathaniel Woods of Madison West High School, Madison WI (Teacher Gale Stone). This essay contest honors Bernice L. Fox who taught English, Latin and Greek at Monmouth College from 1947 to 1981 and who also served for some time as chair of the Department of Classics. Dr. Fox spent much of her life in promoting the study of Latin in Illinois high schools. The college welcomes suggestions for future contest topics. Please contact Dr. Thomas J.
