Y1K

On Thursday, March 2, 2000, Dr. William Napiwocki of Gary, Indiana will be giving a presentation to on the year 1000 A.D. to Tom Sienkewicz' Honors class, which is focusing on the theme of "Reading Through the Millennia." The title of Napiwocki's illustrated lecture is "Y 1 K." No, not Y2K, but Y ONE K! Most of us who follow the Christian Era calendar have to admit that the end of 1999 caused a little nervousness or, at least, a little curiosity. The European/Western world experienced this phenomenon once before. Did the year 999 cause any trepidation to any part of humanity? Were the 900’s similar to our last century? One man, a humanist and scholar, was a product of this century (he died in 1002). How did he weather an end and a beginning? Through his letters and the world around him, a similarity to our own milieu emerges.

Dr. Napiwocki has a Ph.D. in Classics from Loyola University and taught Latin for many years at Weber High School in Chicago.
