CLAS230 Classical Mythology The theme of CLAS230 Classical Mythology this semester is the tragic hero in Greek and Roman mythology. The major myths of ancient Greece and Rome will be surveyed in the context of tragedies written by the ancient Greek playwrights Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, and the Roman philosopher Seneca. Particular focus will be placed on different ways that the tragic hero is portrayed and interpreted by ancient Greek and modern viewers of these plays. The role of ancient tragedy and myth in the development of modern tragic production and theory will also be discussed.
